No Time To Build Your Dreams?
You have a vision for you life.
You know the person you want to become.
You know what that reality looks like.
The problem is, you don't have the time to work on your goals.
I get it, I know what that feels like..
When I was a construction worker doing 50hr+ weeks,
I was completely burnt out and disconnected from my body and emotions.
Even at that time, I had a greater vision for my life.
It was so clear in fact, that it felt like I was living two lives.
The problem was, I would arrive home from work and i'd feel completely exhausted from the day.
Day after day, year after year I watched my dreams take a back seat,
while the list of ideas accumulated in my 'Notes' app.
To manage the feeling of self compromise that blanketed my spirit,
I found relief in choosing to believe that eventually i'd 'find the time' to work on my dreams.
Have you ever felt this way?
Let me save you some time..
The truth is, the right time will never arrive.
And ultimately the reason I could never find the time to work on my dreams,
wasn’t because I was too busy working full-time or partying on the weekends, (although I was)
it was because I was too afraid to fail at the one thing I cared most about in my life. Chasing my dreams.
A belief rooted deep in my subconscious mind, that I wasn’t good enough to make it work,
or that I wasn’t worthy enough to live the life I’d dreamt of,
was stopping me from even trying.
What I slowly came to realise, was that the challenges I was facing in my life,
weren’t the reasons for my lack of progress,
they were the self-fulfilling manifestations of my own limiting beliefs.
I had created them to justify my own inaction in order to feel validated by others
so that I could avoid the fear of becoming my highest self. (in case I fucked it up).
Deep, I know..
It was only once I became aware of these beliefs and worked to rewrite them,
that the challenges causing me immense stress and anxiety suddenly vanished.
We are all in control of our lives, no matter how chaotic things may seem.
Are you working tirelessly towards your goals and feeling like your swimming upstream?
If so, consider if your belief system is silently sabotaging your success.
Here’s a powerful practice you can do today:
Use your phone to write down any negative thoughts that arise throughout the day.
At the end of the day, reflect on your thoughts and the underlying beliefs that may be creating them
Consider where these beliefs came from, if they’re even yours if you’ll continue to carry them
Decide which beliefs you will choose to replace them with
Write down how your behaviours and actions will change once you embody these new beliefs
This simple exercise is the basis of cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT).
What we’re doing here, is that by understanding the connection between thought, feeling and behaviour,
we can rewire our interal beliefs which will automatically transform our external behaviours.
Like magic.
If you’d like more support on this, we cover all of this and more in
‘The Authentic You - 30 Days To Freedom’.This is where I work 1:1 with others
to overcome self limiting beliefs, get clarity on their vision for life
and begin to bring it into existence. All the steps i’ve had to take in my own life.
Students have been getting great results.
Moving on..
An important realisation..
Your life isn't lived 5 years from now, or even 1 day from now.
It's lived only in this moment, now. And how do you feel, RIGHT NOW?
How are you spending your time?
What values are you living by?
What kind of people are you investing your time in?
What environment are you letting influence you?
This is the reality you are creating for yourself.
You might argue that your situation is only temporary,
but understand even as your world evolves and takes on a different form,
if you keep planting the same seeds.. that is, if you maintain the same values and beliefs
Inevitably, you will keep experiencing the patterns in your life.
There is a misconception that there is a level of compromise we need to accept,
in order to achieve what we want in life.
Absolutely, success in your endeavours requires hard work and sometimes sacrifice.
But it should never force you to compromise on your values,
And it should never cost you your sense of self.
The perfect time to become who you want to be, is right now.
The perfect time to build your dreams, is right now.
The perfect time to move to another town,
to make some new friends or to take a 'leap of faith' into your passions, is right now.
If you're waiting for the right moment, it's not going to come.
Your life is decided in this moment, now.
You have in front of you all that you need to begin.
Use whatever resources you have around you begin to take action:
your network
your skills and abilities
your knowledge
When you start taking these small steps, you'll begin to feel more aligned to your higher self,
your confidence will begin to develop and you'll start to enter a state of flow.
Your creativity will peak, your relationships with others will deepen
and your connection to nature itself (God, the universe, etc.) will strengthen.
You will start to feel in tune with the world around you.
Things will begin to work in your favour.
It all begins by redirecting your energy and attention inward,
so you can understand your self more deeply.
The world is full of distractions and now more than ever its vital that you protect your peace.
In order to do so, you need to create an environment that offers you presence
and supports your vision for life.
Here's what worked for me:
turn off or limit notifications from apps or people that don't need direct access to you
create a quiet mode on your phone that limits screen time in the early hours of the day and in the evening before sleep
create a mindfulness practice to develop a relationship with your physical and spiritual self
begin to ask yourself these questions (what are my values, what do I stand for, what do I look for in a relationship, etc.).. write the answers down and reflect on them
write down your vision for life, who you want to become, what environment do you want to live in, what kind of people do you want to be surrounded by?
Begin to embody this 'higher self' in the ways that are currently accessible to you and start to take small actions towards reaching your vision
If you spend 1 hour completing these steps,
the amount of presence you'll start feel and the level of clarity you'll have,
will already be enough to create a HUGE shift in your life.
If not right now, do you have an hour over the next week to try this?
What about 30 minutes?
Set aside this time to honour your self and your vision for life.
Set a reminder in your calendar so you don't forget.
Your future self will thank you for it.
Sometimes, I write letters from my past self to my current self..
and having made this initial commitment to my self, it’s still im so thankful for.
I know this work can be a foreign concept for some.. It was for me too.
Try the steps above, be patient and practice self compassion.
It takes time, to unlearn long-term patterns of behaviour and deep rooted beliefs.
I hope the above steps help you to feel more present in your life
and give you the energy and focus you need to build your dreams.
If you’re a little further ahead, and after a specific system to use
to boost your productivity and reduce burnout, giving you more time to work on your goals.
I am currently working with clients to develop the programs and methods I use to manage multiple projects,
into an easy to use system so others can achieve more in less time.
This is still in development.. but if you’re interested you can stay updated here.
Otherwise, if you enjoyed this entry,
or if your working on a new project you’d like to share..i’d love to hear from you!
